Melatonin, commonly known as brain platinum or pineol, is an indole hormone produced by the pineal gland of mammals and humans. It has effects such as freckle removal, whitening, anti-aging, and improving sleep. But it is very sensitive to light or high humidity conditions, prone to degradation, and has low solubility in water (log P of 1.19), which limits its use as a skincare ingredient in cosmetics.
